Mr Anthony D Clayson, MB ChB, FRCS (Orth)

Following his qualification from Manchester University in 1982, Tony Clayson undertook his general surgical and orthopaedic training in London at The Middlesex Hospital and University College Hospital before returning to the North West of England. He completed a Specialist Fellowship in Lower Limb Joint Replacement Surgery at Wrightington Hospital and visited Centres in Bern, Pittsburgh and Toronto to further develop his interest and expertise in the management of complex hip, pelvic and lower limb disorders.
Having established the North West Regional Pelvic, Acetabular and Young Adult Hip service at North Manchester General Hospital in 1994, Tony has become a nationally recognised expert in the management of complex problems of the hip joint and pelvic bones, regularly receiving referrals from outside the North West of England. His expertise lies both in the field of joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee, together with the assessment and management of young adult hip pain including the treatment of patients with hip dysplasia (underdeveloped hip socket) and hip impingement. This treatment includes the performance of specialised procedures to realign the bones around the hip (osteotomy) as an alternative to joint replacement in younger patients and he is one of only a few surgeons in the UK who regular performs the Ganz Periacetabular Osteotomy. In addition he regularly performs surgical fixations of complex fractures of the pelvis and hip socket treating patients from throughout the North West of England, North Wales and Yorkshire.
In addition to joint replacement surgery of both the hip and knee, his other main area of clinical interest relates to the assessment and management of sports injuries including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and ligament reconstruction of the knee and ankle. He is an avid proponent of an accelerated rehabilitation programme following cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery of the knee, thereby facilitating his patients return to full sporting activities. With this interest in sporting injuries, for many years he has provided orthopaedic advice and support to a number of high profile professional sports clubs including Manchester City Football Club, Lancashire County Cricket Club and Salford City Reds Rugby League Club, as well as a number of semi-professional clubs and also amateur sports men and women.
His extensive clinical experience has also enabled him to become actively involved in clinical governance, a vital part of modern surgical practice, comprising quality assurance processes and the maintenance of high standards in clinical practice. His expertise in this area has been recognised by him acting as an Advisor to the Department of Health on national contracts involving NHS patients receiving their treatment in independent hospitals as well as him acting as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of an Independent hospital . He is also currently a member of the Medical Advisory Panel of the BUPA Group, regularly contributing to governance issues and medical strategic decisions faced by one of the largest independent healthcare organisations in the world.
Experience acquired in these various roles, together with his clinical expertise, means that his patients always benefit from being treated by a clinician who is fully conversant with new developments and aware of all the various factors that are important in ensuring a high quality of clinical care is received. Tony always strives to fully understand his patients problems and ensures that they receive the best possible treatment and care, delivered to the highest possible standards in an environment that is as relaxed as possible.
